Carry-On Backpack vs Wheeled Suitcase: Which Is Better for European Trips?

Should your carry-on be a backpack or a wheeled suitcase? For European short-haul trips, many travellers are switching to backpacks, but wheels still win in some situations. Here is an honest comparison. We make a carry-on backpack, so we’ve tried to be fair about where wheels are better.

The quick verdict

If your trip looks like… Better choice
Budget airline, strict sizers, cobbled old towns, stairs, trains Backpack
Heavy load, long smooth airport walks, back or shoulder issues Wheeled carry-on
Business trip with a suit that must arrive crease-free Wheeled (or a garment-friendly bag)
Multi-city trip, one week or more, carry-on only Backpack (with compression for soft layers)

1. Size rules: wheels and handles use up your allowance

easyJet and British Airways measure cabin bags including handles and wheels, and Wizz Air lets wheels add no more than 5 cm. On a wheeled case, part of the allowed volume is taken up by hardware. A soft backpack uses nearly all of it for packing space, and it squeezes into a gate sizer more easily than a rigid shell at the limit. See our EU/UK airline cabin bag size table for each airline’s published limits, and always check your airline before flying.

2. Weight: the shell counts against you

Cabin limits of 8–10 kg are common in Europe (Lufthansa lists 8 kg for its carry-on). Wheels, a telescopic handle and a hard shell can take a real share of that before you pack anything. A soft backpack is usually lighter empty, which leaves more allowance for clothes. Check the empty weight of any bag you’re considering.

3. Terrain: Europe is hard on wheels

Cobblestones, metro stairs, ferry ramps and hilly old towns are where backpacks clearly win. You keep your hands free for tickets and your phone, and you’re not dragging a case up three flights to a walk-up apartment.

4. Comfort: where wheels win

If you’re carrying 10 kg through a large hub, or you have back or shoulder problems, wheels are kinder. A backpack should have padded straps and sit close to your back. Pack heavy items nearest your spine. If carrying weight is painful for you, choose wheels.

5. Packing efficiency and access

Clamshell suitcases are great for folding shirts flat. Backpacks are better for quick access to a laptop at security and for using every bit of an odd-shaped space. Compression evens out the volume difference: pressing soft clothes flat and then removing air shrinks bulky layers a lot (shoes and toiletries don’t compress). Compare approaches in vacuum cubes vs a built-in vacuum backpack.

6. Price

Good bags of both types are available under about $150. Our under-$150 carry-on backpack guide covers what to look for (zips, stitching, warranty, return window) without ranking anyone as a fake #1.

Where the Airbag Lite fits

The Airbag Lite is a carry-on backpack with built-in vacuum compression. You press clothes down by hand, and the included Air Pump Lite (free, not sold separately) removes the remaining air. Packed size is 48 × 32 × 10 cm, within the overhead cabin-bag limits listed by the major EU/UK airlines we checked, but larger than their free under-seat allowance. It expands for extra packing, but don’t assume the expanded bag will be accepted in the cabin. Check your airline. It has a TSA-accepted combination lock and a 2-year warranty, and is rated 4.8★ from 350+ reviews · 3,000 customers.

If wheels suit you better, that’s a perfectly good choice. Pick the bag that fits your back, your routes and your airline’s rules. More questions are answered in the FAQ.

FAQ

Is a backpack or a suitcase better for Ryanair?

Ryanair’s free item is 40 × 30 × 20 cm and must fit under the seat. A larger cabin bag (55 × 40 × 20 cm, 10 kg) needs Priority & 2 Cabin Bags, as checked on 3 October 2026. Either style works within those limits. A soft backpack is usually easier to fit in the sizer.

Do wheels count in the cabin bag dimensions?

On easyJet and BA, yes. Wizz Air excludes them but limits wheels to 5 cm extra. Check your airline’s page.
