Razors, Scissors and Tweezers in Hand Luggage: UK vs TSA Rules (2026)

Can you take a razor, scissors or tweezers in your hand luggage? Mostly yes, but the limits differ between UK airports and US (TSA) checkpoints, and the details matter. Here are the official rules, checked on 13 October 2026.

Grooming and sharp items: UK vs TSA

Item UK airports (GOV.UK), hand luggage US (TSA), carry-on
Disposable / fixed-cartridge razor Yes Yes
Loose razor blades (e.g. safety-razor blades, box cutter) Not listed as allowed; pack in hold luggage No. Razor blades not in a cartridge are prohibited in carry-on
Small scissors Yes, blades no longer than 6 cm Yes, if less than 4 inches from the pivot point
Large scissors No (blades longer than 6 cm). Hold luggage, check with your airline No (4 inches or more from the pivot)
Round-ended / blunt scissors Yes Covered by the 4-inch rule
Tweezers Yes Yes
Nail clippers / nail file Yes Nail clippers: yes
Knives No (sharp or pointed blade and/or blade longer than 6 cm) No, except rounded-blade butter knives or plastic cutlery
Knitting needles / sewing needle Yes Check TSA "What Can I Bring?"
Cigarette lighter One lighter, in a plastic liquids bag kept on your person Check TSA "What Can I Bring?"

At both, the officer has the final say: GOV.UK says security "will not let anything through that they consider dangerous", and TSA says "the final decision rests with the TSA officer". Rules at other EU airports can differ, so check your departure airport.

Packing tips for a toiletry kit that clears security

  • Cartridge razor in the cabin, blades in the hold. If you shave with a safety razor and only have a cabin bag, buy blades at your destination.
  • Measure scissors before you fly: 6 cm blade (UK) and 4 inches from the pivot (TSA) aren't the same thing.
  • Liquids still apply: shaving gel and aftershave follow the liquids rules. See liquids in hand luggage: 100 ml vs 2 litres.
  • Keep the kit near the top so it's easy to pull out if a bag is searched. See airport and TSA tips for a lockable backpack.
  • Sharp items in checked bags should be sheathed or securely wrapped (TSA).

Where the Airbag Lite fits

The Airbag Lite is a cabin-size backpack (48 × 32 × 10 cm unexpanded) with a TSA-accepted combination lock and built-in vacuum compression for soft clothes. Compression saves space, not weight, and carry-on allowances vary by airline, so check yours: 2026 airline cabin bag size chart. More answers in our FAQ.
