TSA-Accepted Lock Backpacks Explained: What the Lock Does (and Doesn't)

Search for a "TSA lock backpack" and you'll see the words approved, accepted and recognised used loosely. Here's what a TSA-accepted lock actually means, what it doesn't do, and how to use one on a carry-on backpack.

What "TSA-accepted" means

A TSA-accepted lock is one that US Transportation Security Administration officers can open with a master tool if they need to inspect a bag, instead of cutting it off. The TSA doesn't approve or certify luggage brands, so we describe the lock on our Airbag Lite as TSA-accepted. You'll usually see a red diamond logo on these locks.

What it doesn't do

  • It doesn't stop a bag from being opened at security. Officers can still open it.
  • It isn't a theft guarantee. A lock deters casual opportunists; keep passports, cash and electronics on you.
  • Outside the US, security staff may not use the master key, so be ready to unlock on request.

  1. Set your own combination before your trip and write it somewhere other than the bag.
  2. Lock the main zips in hostels, on trains and in shared spaces, not only at the airport.
  3. Keep liquids and laptops easy to reach so you don't need to unpack at screening. See our airport security tips for compressed clothes.

The Airbag Lite lock, in short

The Airbag Lite has a TSA-accepted combination lock on lockable zips, and the Air Pump Lite is included free. You press soft clothes down by hand, then the pump draws out the remaining air. It measures 48 × 32 × 10 cm, a cabin-bag size on many airlines. Check your airline's cabin size before you fly. Our 2026 airline cabin bag size chart links every airline's official page.
