Gate-Checked Cabin Bag: What Happens, What It Costs and What to Take Out
You get to the gate and hear "the flight is full, we need to check some cabin bags". Or a staff member points at the sizer. These are two very different situations: one is usually free, and the other can cost more than the flight. This guide explains the difference, what to keep with you, and how to avoid surprise fees. Sources were checked on 3 October 2026.
Two kinds of gate check
| "Cabin is full" gate check | "Your bag is too big" gate check | |
|---|---|---|
| Why it happens | The overhead bins run out of space, or the aircraft changes | Your bag is over the size or weight you paid for |
| Typical cost | Usually free | A fee, which can be high (see Vueling below) |
| Can you avoid it? | Partly. Board early, or carry a smaller bag | Yes. Measure and weigh your bag packed |
Real fee example: Vueling
Vueling's official help page says that if your under-seat bag is over 40 × 30 × 20 cm at the boarding gate, it will be checked in for €60 to €75 per item, per flight. If any bag is over 55 × 40 × 20 cm, it costs €110 to €140 per item, per flight. Other low-cost airlines have similar gate charges. Look them up on your airline's site before you fly, because they're almost always higher than adding a bag online in advance.
What the new EU rules will change (from 23 October 2027)
The passenger-rights reform agreed in 2026 says that if safety, capacity or an aircraft change stops your personal item or hand baggage going in the cabin, the airline can put it in the hold "at no further cost to the passenger". In other words, "cabin full" gate checks become free by law on flights covered by EU261. It doesn't stop fees for bags that are over the limit. The rules apply from 23 October 2027. Before you hand it over: the 60-second checklist
- Take out lithium batteries. Power banks and spare lithium batteries must stay in the cabin. Read power banks on planes in 2026.
- Take out valuables and essentials. Passport, wallet, keys, medicines, laptop, jewellery and anything you'd need if the bag were delayed.
- Lock it. A TSA-accepted lock can be opened by security if needed, so they don't have to break it.
- Get a tag and a receipt. Photograph the tag. Ask whether you collect the bag at the aircraft door or at baggage reclaim.
- Tighten straps. Clip or stow backpack straps so they don't catch on belts.
How to make a gate check less likely
- Know your exact allowance. Look up your airline in our 2026 airline cabin bag size chart.
- Measure the bag packed, including wheels, handles and full pockets. A soft backpack is easier to fit in a sizer than a rigid case. See backpack vs wheeled suitcase.
- Don't over-expand. An expandable bag that meets the limit when closed can go over it when expanded.
- Pack light enough to go under the seat if needed on airlines where only the personal item is guaranteed. Read personal item vs carry-on.
- Use a checklist so you don't pack what you won't use: our printable carry-on checklist.
Where the Airbag Lite fits
The Airbag Lite measures 48 × 32 × 10 cm packed, so check your airline. That's within many airlines' cabin bag limits, but it isn't a free under-seat personal item on most budget airlines. It expands for extra packing, so close it back down before the gate. Don't assume the expanded size is accepted in the cabin. You compress clothes by hand, then the included Air Pump Lite (free) draws out the remaining air. It has a TSA-accepted combination lock and is rated 4.8★ from 350+ reviews · 3,000 customers.
