Long-Haul Flight Carry-On Essentials: What to Pack in Your Cabin Bag
On a long-haul flight your carry-on is your living space for 8 to 15 hours, and it's also your back-up if checked luggage is delayed. This list covers what to keep within reach at your seat, what to put in the overhead bag, and how to fit it all in one cabin-size backpack.
1. At your seat: the small bag
- Passport, boarding pass and any visa or entry documents
- Phone, charging cable and a power bank (power banks must travel in the cabin; see our power bank rules)
- Headphones, an eye mask and earplugs
- Empty refillable water bottle (fill it after security)
- Lip balm, hand cream and medication, keeping liquids within your departure airport's limits
- A warm layer: cabins are often cool on overnight flights
2. In the overhead bag: the "lost luggage" kit
If you are also checking a bag, pack one full change of clothes, underwear, basic toiletries and chargers in your carry-on. If your checked bag arrives a day late, you can still get on with the trip. Read what happens if your cabin bag is gate-checked and keep valuables, medication and batteries on you either way.
3. Comfort items worth the space

- Compression socks, if your doctor recommends them
- A light scarf or travel blanket
- Slip-on shoes or thick socks for the cabin
- Toothbrush and a small toothpaste to freshen up before landing
- Pen for any arrival forms
4. Fit it all in one cabin bag
Long-haul cabin allowances differ by airline and fare, so check your ticket before packing; our 2026 airline cabin bag size chart lists published limits. Bulky layers are what usually overfill a carry-on. Compressing soft clothes helps them take less space, though it doesn't reduce weight, and shoes and toiletries don't compress. For a full week's list, see how to pack a week in a carry-on.
5. Where the Airbag Lite fits in

The Airbag Lite is a carry-on backpack with a built-in vacuum compression compartment for soft clothes and a dedicated laptop sleeve that fits up to 17-inch. It includes Air Pump Lite free. Unexpanded it measures 48 × 32 × 10 cm. Check your airline's cabin size before you fly. If it is expanded to 48 × 32 × 15 cm or overpacked, it may no longer meet carry-on limits. It weighs 1.9 kg and closes with a TSA-accepted combination lock.
