Cabin Bag Gate Fees by Airline (2026 Table): What You Pay If Your Bag Is Too Big
What does it cost if your cabin bag is too big, or not booked, when you reach the boarding gate? We checked each airline's own fee and policy pages on 8 October 2026 and put the gate charges in one table. Where an airline doesn't publish a fixed figure, we say so rather than guess.

| Airline | Free bag (under seat) | What triggers the gate fee | Gate fee (official) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryanair | 40 × 30 × 20 cm | Bringing a bag over 55 × 40 × 20 cm to the gate | €/£70–75 per bag (or the bag is refused) |
| Ryanair | 40 × 30 × 20 cm | Bringing a 10 kg bag to the gate without Priority or a bag on your booking | €/£46–75 per bag (or refused) |
| easyJet | 45 × 36 × 20 cm | Bringing a large cabin bag (up to 56 × 45 × 25 cm) that isn't booked | £60 |
| Vueling | 40 × 30 × 20 cm | Under-seat bag over 40 × 30 × 20 cm at the gate | €60–75 per item, per flight |
| Vueling | 40 × 30 × 20 cm | Any bag over 55 × 40 × 20 cm at the gate | €110–140 per item, per flight |
| Aer Lingus | Small personal item (40 × 30 × 20 cm) | Bringing a 10 kg bag to the gate when it isn't in your booking | €35 (bag goes in the hold) |
| Wizz Air | 40 × 30 × 20 cm | Bag over the size or weight limit | Oversize fee charged at the gate. No fixed figure on the cabin-baggage page; see Wizz Air's fees |
| Frontier (US) | 14 × 18 × 8 in personal item | Carry-on bought at the gate | Frontier says gate prices are its "highest price". Varies by route |
The fees are per bag and per flight unless stated. Ryanair also charges €/£35.99 if you buy a 10 kg check-in bag at the bag drop desk instead. That's cheaper than the gate, but more than buying online.
What the table tells you
- The gate is the most expensive place to pay. Ryanair, easyJet, Aer Lingus and Frontier all say or show that adding a bag in advance costs less than paying at the gate.
- Depth is the usual trap. Most free bags are only 20 cm deep, and a stuffed soft bag can bulge past that.
- "Cabin full" isn't the same as "bag too big". When the overhead bins are full, many airlines check booked bags into the hold for free. The fees above are for bags that break the rules. See gate-checked cabin bags explained.
- EU law changes this from 23 October 2027, but only for capacity and safety reasons. Oversize fees remain. See the new EU hand luggage rules.
How to avoid paying at the gate
- Look up your exact allowance in our 2026 airline cabin bag size chart. It covers sizes and weights for 20 airlines.
- Measure the bag packed, including wheels, handles and front pockets.
- Weigh it if your airline has a weight limit. Many are 10 kg.
- If you need more than the free bag, add it online. Our baggage-fee calculator shows when a bigger allowance pays off.
- Flying Ryanair on the free bag only? Use our 40 × 30 × 20 cm packing list.

Where the Airbag Lite fits
The Airbag Lite is a cabin-size backpack, not a free under-seat personal item on most airlines. Packed, it measures 48 × 32 × 10 cm, so check your airline. It expands for extra packing, but the expanded size may not fit cabin limits, so close it before the gate. You press soft clothes down by hand, then the included Air Pump Lite (free) draws out the remaining air. It has a TSA-accepted combination lock and is rated 4.8★ from 350+ reviews · 3,000 customers.
