Two Weeks in Europe With Only a Carry-On Backpack: Packing Plan

Two weeks in Europe with only a backpack is very doable, and it's often easier on cobblestones, trains and budget flights. This plan is built around one cabin-size bag, one mid-trip wash and compressing soft clothes.

1. Pick the bag size for your strictest flight

Your bag has to fit the strictest airline on your route. Budget carriers often allow only a small under-seat item free and charge for a larger cabin bag. Compare sizes in our 2026 airline cabin bag size chart and the EU and UK cabin bag rules. For reference, the Airbag Lite measures 48 × 32 × 10 cm; check your airline's allowance for your fare before you fly.

2. The 14-day list (wash once)

  • 7 tops, 2 bottoms plus the pair you wear, 1 warm layer, 1 light rain jacket
  • 7 underwear, 7 pairs of socks, sleepwear
  • 1 pair of shoes worn, 1 pair of light shoes packed
  • Toiletries in a clear bag (check the liquids rules for your departure airport)
  • Phone, charger, adapter and power bank in the cabin

3. Compress the soft stuff

Rolling helps, and vacuum compression helps knits and a warm layer pack down. In the Airbag Lite you press the clothes down by hand and the included Air Pump Lite (free with the bag) removes the rest of the air. Remember that compression saves space, not weight, and shoes and toiletries don't compress.

4. Wash on day 7

A sink wash or a laundrette halfway through means you only pack for one week. Repack and re-compress before your next leg.

5. Keep it secure on the move

A lockable bag helps on night trains and in hostels. The Airbag Lite's zips close with a TSA-accepted combination lock; see what TSA-accepted means.
